The Loch Ness Monster

The legend of the Loch Ness Monster began back in the 1930s. This is the story of there being a creature like a Plesiosaur (a type of dinosaur) that is still surviving and living in the Loch Ness. This is a lake in Scotland. The lake is very deep and the waters can be very still. There are people who think that there could be a big dinosaur like creature hiding beneath the dark waters.

A man called George Spicer and his wife said they saw a strange creature in 1933. They said the creature had a huge body and a long neck. It walked across the road in front of them and slid down into the lake crashing through bush.

Arthur Grant saw a creature in 1933 as well. He saw it at night time and he said it had a long neck and a small head like a dinosaur. It walked down into the lake and disappeared and Arthur only saw ripples in the water.

A man called Hugh Gray was the first person to photograph the monster. He took a picture of it swimming with it’s head just above the water. Some people who saw his photo thought it looked like his dog that was swimming with a stick in it’s mouth.

There is a famous photo of the monster taken by Robert Wilson in 1934. This photo shows the monster  above the water. Lots of people thought that this photo was proof of the monster, but other people thought it was just Robert Wilson playing a trick on everyone.

There was another picture of the monster which became known as the Loch Ness Muppet. Anthony Shiels took this photo in 1977 and said it shows the head and neck of the Loch Ness Monster coming through the water. But people thought it was fake because there are no ripples around the creature in the water.

David Elder filmed a strange wave on the lake in 2013. The wave looks as though it is about 4 metres high. He says that there was a creature swimming on top of the lake that caused the big wave. But other people think the wave was caused by the wind.

There is even a strange looking creature seen floating the lake on a satellite photo on Apple Maps in 2014. Some people think that it shows the monster lying just below the surface. But others think it is probably just a big piece of wood lying there.

Lots of people like to go to Loch Ness in Scotland to try to find the monster. Between 1965 - 1973 there was a volunteer group who would come and visit and camp beside the lake taking photos trying to find the monster.

In 1967 a man called Gordon Tucker set up a sonar machine in the lake. This machine sent invisible waves through the lake and was looking for any signs of a big creature that might be in there. There were lots of large objects found to be in the lake and never did any of them come up to surface to take a breath. What were those objects?

A man called Robert Rines made lots of trips to Loch Ness. He used underwater cameras and sonar gear to try to find it. He took lots of photos of large and mysterious objects that were in the lake. He thinks that there used to actually be a monster that did live in the lake but that now it is extinct. That is why less people seem to see it these days.

In 1987 there was a big search named Operation Deep Scan’. 24 boats went looking for the monster in the lake and they used special echo-sound equipment to find it. After a long search, they did find signs of a moving object that was way down in the deep water (about 180m deep) that looked too big to be a fish. They think it may be a species of animal that no one has discovered yet, or maybe the monster.

So if it is not a monster in the lake, what do people keep seeing then?
Some people think it could be a Greenland Shark This creature is quite big and they can live in fresh water like the lake.
Maybe it is a Wels Catfish. These fish grow very big and if you saw one in the lake you might think it was a monster.
There are seals that have been spotted living in the Loch Ness. Perhaps if you were not expecting to see a seal swimming around, you might think it was a monster.
Or what about a hoax (a fake). There have been at least 6 different hoaxes about the Loch Ness Monster. This is where people pretend they have seen a monster just to try to get famous for a little bit.

Is there really a plesiosaur type creature living in the lake? Is it all just made up stories? Who knows?
