Go Room 4!

It has been a lot of fun working with room 4 this year. To celebrate the last week of school we had a little photo shoot on the playground. Saurish and Suniya were both away, but you guys have been awesome to work with too! I hope to keep in touch with everyone in 2017, and good luck to Olivia and Zishan at Churton Park School too. We will miss you!

Sharing Time.

On Friday, there were a lot of us wanting to share our reading and writing work to the class. There were some journal plays, great stories, puppet shows and even a space unicorn dance and song.

Puppet Shows

Some of the girls decided to turn their writing work into puppet shows today. We got to see some very clever performances (including one that had Donald Trump being played by a magpie!)

Nice work girls.

Keen Problem Solvers.

Here is a photo of one of our maths groups working out some rather tricky visual problem solving challenges. We have been practicing using trial and error all term and the children are getting really good at problem solving because of it.

Hui Time.

Today room 4 were one of the classes to host the school hui. The children all went on stage and read aloud their favourite sentence from their most recent piece of writing.

They all did well to speak into a microphone in front of a very big audience, including some very interested Mum's and Dad's!

I looked in the window for my Mum and Dad but they were lying motionless on the ground - Patrick.

I shut my eyes and took a deep breath - Olivia.

But Fiza was flat faced on the ground with a knife in her back - Suniya.

When the door creaked shut behind me - Gabi.

Jay could hear a rattling of bones behind him, the chase was on - Ted.

I was walking with my friends and I saw a house. I was frozen in fear. We didn’t dare to take a step - Roman.

I was walking home when someone came running towards me - Oliver.

I looked at the house and gulped - Maggie E.

I got scared. I went to my Mum’s room. She was dead - Poppy.

I shivered as a black cat scattered by - Codie.

Then I opened the door. Something leapt at me and I looked behind me. The door shut - Caitlin.

I slowly walked closer. Yum, a giant ice-cream, that is alive. OMG - Piper.

I ran screaming even though no one could hear my desperate screams for mercy - Rose.

My hair was standing on end. I was shivering like mad. And then when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I heard an ear splitting crash - Daniel.

Then I opened the door in a spooky house, something made me fall down - Kaden.

They started running towards me - Nakul.

Grandma was gone. “Grandma Grandma” I called. The house was empty like a murderers place - Serena.

They looked strange in the night - Samhita.

The trees are making spooky noises pushing together - Maggie H.

I opened the door. It was dark and smelled like stinky perfume - Kirsten.

She banged the frying pan on Ava. “Oh sorry,” said Mimella. “I thought you were a tiger.” - Aarushi

I went to Mum and Dad’s room. A bat flew by. I ran. Mum was screaming nervously. - Jacob.

I looked in the window. There stood a man. He turned to face me and slowly turned into a werewolf - Michael.

I killed the zombie and I knocked down the old door and ran as fast I could until anyone came. It was like a museum of sharks - Saurish.

I saw a door in the distance. I started running towards it but it was getting further away. - Jayden

Talent Show.

Zishan was invited to perform with his violin in front of the school before the start of the talent show on Wednesday. He played his very complicated song really well and got a big round of applause when he finished.

Well done Maggie on making it through to the finals of the talent show. She got up in front of a very big audience and sang the classic song "sitting on the dock of the bay." We were all impressed by her great voice and I was especially impressed with how well she could hold a tune when singing through a microphone....not as easy as it looks. Good on you Maggie.

Mega Marble Tower

Daniel worked as a buddy with Zishan the other morning and the two of them completed a mega marble tower. When we tested it out, it took a very long time for the marble to reach the bottom.

Playground Time.

We finally got a sunny day today and it doesn't feel like we have had many of those lately at school! So for the last 20 minutes of the day there were many classes outside (including us!) as we decided it was playground time!

Word puzzle champions!

On Wednesday, as a fun afternoon activity I unleashed these 21 rebus word puzzles on Room 4. We are studying how to use inferences in Reading at the moment so I thought that these puzzles would further encourage the children to look for clues. I expected the word puzzles to be a bit too hard for most, but lots of the children surprised me with how many they were able to solve.

Here is a photo of our 3 word puzzle champions. Jayden, Ted and Daniel worked tirelessly together to solve 20 of the 21 questions. I gave them a couple of very small clues for about 2 of the questions, but the rest they did themselves! Here they are celebrating with a victory dance!

In the post below are the puzzles I gave to the class. See if you can solve more than we did!

Rebus puzzles for you to try.

See how many of these rebus word puzzles you can solve at home. Can you solve more than our Room 4 champions?

Cultural Performances.

Well done to all the students from the middle and senior school who performed their cultural items very well last night. These pictures show some of the items having a dress rehearsal yesterday afternoon.
And thanks to all the parents and families who supported the event by coming along for the performance and bringing food in to help celebrate with.

Tapu ae, our new game.

After practicing a lot of large ball skills last term, room 4 have been introduced to a game called tapu ae. It is a maori game that encourages involvement as every player has a designated position and each position has it's own role. There are attackers, midfielders, defenders and each team has one guard protecting the precious yellow cones! The cool thing about this game is there are two dodgeballs on the go at all times so you really have to be alert. I have been impressed with how well room 4 have picked up the rules and techniques for this new game and everyone is getting involved.

Welcome to Our Class Zishan.

Zishan is a student from our school SEU. He has been working in Room 4 every day this year for short blocks of about 30 minutes at a time. This term, Zishan has come and joined our class full time.

It is exciting for us to have him working in our class and the children in Room 4 really enjoy working with Zishan. He has fitted in very well to his new environment and it is great to have you in our class Zishan!

This photo shows Zishan concentrating hard in a game of basic facts bingo.

New Wet Day Games For Room 4.

Our fantastic Home and School team allowed us to spend $200 on each classroom this year. I asked the children in Room 4 about what sorts of things they would like to have, with the emphasis being on wet day games. Needless to say, they were very good at coming up with ideas!

So in the holidays I managed to buy a new mega marble run-game, top trumps cards, a new chess set, a twister game and a hot wheels car track. I also acquired a jenga game and a monopoly game too.

This morning some of the children decided to test them out and they were a big success. I think some children in Room 4 are hoping that we have some wet days soon!
