Te Papa.

We had a great trip to Te Papa today. We learned lots about different cultures and people who have traveled to New Zealand. But the favourite activities seemed to be the geological dig sandpit and the dark caves that you could make monster sounds in! Thanks to Colleen, Saba, Sharon, Sola and Toni for all your help today too, it was very appreciated.

Should Every Family Have to Have a Pet?

I know we don’t want pets in the woods, but we don’t want them to have miserable lives either. So maybe
not every family needs a pet. I wonder what would happen to pets if there owners didn’t like them. How miserable their lives must be, pets with no owners that loved or even liked them.

Sione's Last Day!

Sione has his last day at our school on Friday this week. He is starting at a new school in Tawa where he has recently moved with his family. Sione has been an awesome class member this year and it has been a lot of fun working with him.

Sione, we will really miss you and we hope that you do well at your new school.

We are going to be having a shared lunch this Friday so feel free to send in something nice to eat with your child that day. I will be bringing in some items as well.

New Computers

Johnsonville School has purchaesd new laptops and now we have enough devices for 1 between every 2 children in our class. This has been fantastic and the children are really enjoying the higher ratio of devices to use. Here are some of the children working on their festival slideshows today.

Scary.

’Goodnight’’. said mum. ‘’goodnight’’ I replied. ‘’BANG!’’ ‘’what was that ‘’  I shouted to my sleepy sister. ‘’Probaly the door’’ she shouted back. ‘’Ok’’ five seconds later
‘’Arooo arooo’’ My body was trembling with fear. ‘’clash  clang’’ what is that noise I wondered. So 1 hour later I crept in the kitchen.  ‘’nothing’’ I whispered. ‘’woof woof’’. ‘’not again’’ I said. But when looked out I saw a face looking at me. it was a ghost face I again was trembling with fear but just as I was about to scream it vanished. So I went back to bed but not for long ‘’MWAAAH’’ ‘
’Help’’ I screamed. I didn’t dare go to the window because I knew something was waiting for me but then I relized it was in my room. it was a witch all green and sticky.

Under The Rug!

One afternoon there was a man. His name was Spanker. there was a spooky lump under the rug. It was moving around .The tv fell down and the lamp fell down. The ground was shaking like an earthquake. The wolf was howling. Spanker was screaming. Spanker ran into his hallway to find a weapon to chase the lump with. He got a knife. He ran down the hallway but  the lump was gone.

The End.

Rubbish Collection Fridays.

We have been going out for 15 mins over the last 3 Fridays with Room 16 and collecting rubbish around the school. I must say, last Friday it was getting much more difficult to find as much rubbish lying around due the children all getting in and helping like this.

New maths teachers!

We have been trying a new system where every morning for maths, one of the children runs a short class workshop based on our current unit. I give that child a copy of a short script that they read through with a short selection of questions they can teach to the rest of the class. It has been a real success. Here is Roman having a go at being the teacher. He was a natural! He encouraged the children, asked a variety of different children and got them to explain their working out methods. I might be out of a job if I'm not careful!

Room 4 Lamb Visit

Sharon (Jacob's Mum) brought in a lamb that their family is looking after at the moment for some friends. The lamb would not have survived if it was not for their help. The lamb is now 4 days old and very strong. It had a great time meeting the kids in room 4 and it even played a few running games with some of us! It looked very smart dressed in it's best nappy especially for the occasion! Thanks Sharon.

String From Flax

Today in Te Reo, Whaea Adrienne showed us how to get string from the fibres of the flax leaf. We used a bread knife and had to pull the flax apart away from a delicate cut that had been made through the leaf itself. It was much more difficult than it looked but some of us had some success in the end.

Naghol Land Divers.

While learning about festivals in other cultures, we looked at the Naghol Land Divers of Pentacost Island in Vanuatu.

We watched a little video about how they jump off towers made of sticks with only two vines strapped to their ankles. We thought it probably wasn't a good idea to try bungee jumping off our playground! So instead, we created mini towers out of straws and used little plastic wind up sumo wrestlers to bungee jump off them. The trick was to try and build the tower so that the jumper would not quite hit the ground. So of us came up with some very clever ways of making this happen.
