Space Music.

There are a lot of musical instruments in Room 4 at the moment that I am using as part of the JSPA rotation groups. So far however, I have only worked with the year 5s and the year 6s, so none of our class have been able to play music. The kids have been itching to play the instruments and yesterday I gave in and we played some Space Music together! They worked in little groups to complete some simple space sound effects and they got to try lots of the different instruments in the process. It was a bit noisy and lots of fun.

Hockey Day.

As a culmination to our hockey 4 week sessions, our syndicate took part in a whanau house group hockey tournament. The final was played between Pihipihi 1 and Pihipihi 2 so it was a very good day to be in that whanau house!!

Some of us scored goals, some us got to hit the ball a lot and some of us made lots of tackles and lots of noise with our hockey sticks crashing together!

Gravity Experiments.

As part of our space unit, we have been learning about the process of completing a science experiment. Now that the children have had some practice at this, they were asked to run their own experiment about gravity. They had to compare 2 things (ie which car rolls faster? which length string makes a pendulum swing longer? which parachute will stay in the air the longest?) and then they had to conduct the experiment. After this, they had to write it up using the proper procedure. Here are some of the experiments being constructed.

TV Show Theme Music.

For reading, the students are able to choose from a range of creative tasks this week. One of the tasks is to come up with a kids TV show theme song for your mysterious creature. We practiced writing a simple melody to very simple words and these photos show Kirsten, Suniya and Aarushi having a go at it. They created some really cool ideas for their first try!

Novel Quiz.

Recently I finished reading Room 4 the novel called Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH. They really enjoyed that book and after we finished we had a little 23 question quiz to see who remembered the most about the story.

Our top scorers were:

23/23 - Daniel (Amazing effort!)
22/23 - Ted, Roman, Patrick, Aarushi, Olivia and Poppy.
20/23 - Maggie Elder.

Movie Time.

We filled up the class marble jar again so it was time for another reward. This time we watched a movie. We watched the Water Horse as it is about the Loch Ness Monster and some of us had researched this creature as part of our recent reading unit. Everyone got a mini party bag of lollies and we turned off the lights to watch the movie. It was a nice way to spend a wet Friday afternoon.
